Polyethylene wax is a low molecular weight polyethylene homopolymer or copolymer widely used in coatings. The so-called wax means that the polymer finally floats in the form of microcrystalline and plays a similar but more diverse and practical role in the coating surface than paraffin. The main functions of polyethylene wax in solvent-based coating film are: extinction, scratch resistance, abrasion resistance, polishing resistance, engraving resistance, adhesion resistance, sedimentation resistance and thixotropy; good lubricity and processability.

Polyethylene wax is dissolved in the solvent at high temperature, but precipitated when cooled to normal temperature, and exists in the coating in the form of microcrystalline. Because its thixotropy is conducive to the storage of the coating, it can migrate to the surface of the coating film during the solvent volatilization process after the application of the coating, and finally form a “waxed” surface with other components of the coating.
The function of polyethylene wax depends on the variety and specification of polyethylene wax, and finally the size of particle size, the ability to migrate to the surface of the coating film, the composition of the coating, the properties of the coated substrate, and the construction and application methods.

The characteristics and mechanism of wax in coatings are various, and the morphology of wax in coating film can be roughly divided into the following three types:
1. Frosting effect: for example, when the melting point of the selected wax is lower than the baking temperature, the wax will melt into liquid during baking, and a frost-like thin layer will be formed on the coating surface after the film is cooled.
2. Spherical axis effect: This effect is that the wax is exposed because its particle size is similar to or even larger than the coating film thickness, so that the scratch resistance and scratch resistance of the wax can be shown.

3. Floating effect: no matter the particle shape of wax, the wax drifts to the surface of the coating film and is evenly dispersed during the film forming process, making the top layer of the coating film protected by wax, showing the characteristics of wax.
